National Archives, Paris

4.5
A grand mansion in Paris's third arrondissement built for the Prince and Princess of Soubise now houses National Archives. The archives museum features significant government documents, as well as changing exhibits. Visit the iron chest, home to all versions of the French constitution from the original of 1791 to the present day. Browse French government materials and international documents detailing France's foreign relations. The building itself is worth a trip to view both the Rococo-style interior and the well-manicured gardens outside the Baroque mansion. • The least: the very noisy and therefore embarrassing work, the temporary exhibition on the maps that welcomed a large group, it was a bit complicated to access the documents; the most: the price of admission 5 euros, the visit of the hotel of Soubise which is being renovated but what we see is already a revelation, the emotion that one feels sending certain documents: the oath of the Jeu de Paume, the last letter of Marie Antoinette , the Edit of Nantes, the Edit of Villars Cotterets; extremely interesting explanations about documents, writings and archiving. I look forward to the completion of the work to see the outcome and the new presentation.

  • Only a few euro and very quiet with an interesting display and explanation of the development of records and archives. Building was started in 14th century with original turrets still there and restored. History includes the plans to massacre protestants in 16th? Century. Prince and Princess bedrooms and secret doors and stairs... Good value... Ask the very helpful attendant with the mowhawk hair! 😁
  • What nice place! I went to see the exhibition Mobile/Immobile, which is fantastic, with the guided tour gave me a very interesting background information. Additionally, you can see several historical documents, some with more than 1500 years! Nice place to go!
