He won the Prix de Rome in 1858 with his image of Eva and Adam who finds the dead Abel, and he exhibited at the salon in Paris. His works are seen in some French art museums, and in Colmar and Mulhouse in particular, you can experience his works. But should you really see – and be overtaken – by Henner's art, then visit the Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner in Avenue Villiers, which was opened in 1924. Marie Henner, a widow of a nephew of Jean-Jacques Henner, bewiled the Great collection of about 440 works that Henner had left behind in his studio. Also furniture and objects that had belonged to Henner are exhibited in the museum's three floors. Henner's inspirational sources were the Italian Renaissance, but he is also akin to Camille Corot, and uses through Sfumatoteknik and Clairobscur/chiaroscuro. Henner painted mainly portraits, but also landscape images, nature morte and other motifs were occasionally on his canvases. When you visit a museum that owns a collection of 20 or 30 pictures of the same artist, you are happy because you can experience many different works of the same painter. In the Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner There are over 400 works of Henner everywhere from floor to ceiling, images of different sizes are seen among each other. Masterpieces are mixed with pictures that more have the character of study material or sketch. An amazing experience comparable to a visit to Musée Gustave Moreau. Having been a guest in these museums, you have the feeling of really having seen the works of the artist. As I said, Henner is not very well known, but once you have experienced his art, you do not forget him again.
This is one of the lesser-known museums in Paris. The art of Jean-Jacques Henner is unique. Amazingly, we had the whole museum to ourselves and very much enjoyed our time discovering this exceptional ... more »
Quiet and not too crowded museum. The venue is more interesting than the paintings themselves. But it is my personal opinion. This workshop-type house has French ceiling and old wooden staircases which create a home-like atmosphere. A peculiar spot in Paris.
Beautiful building, free for under 26, feels like being in the home of this not so famous yet very talented painter! If you are tired of mai stream museums in Paris try swinging by this one!
