Devoted to the artists, writers, and composers of the Romantic period, Musee de la Vie Romantique was the Paris base of Dutch-born painter Ary Scheffer (1795–1858). For decades, Scheffer and his daughter hosted Friday evening salons, attracting the likes of George Sand, Frederic Chopin, Eugène Delacroix, Franz Liszt, Gioacchino Rossini, and singer Pauline Viardot. Later in the century, Charles Dickens, Ivan Turgueniev, and Charles Gounod attended regularly. The museum displays numerous mementos of these luminaries, as well as Romantic-era paintings, sculptures, and objets d'art. • In Rue Chaptal, the house that the painter Ary Scheffer (1795 – 1858) lived in from 1830, and his home became a gathering place for many of his time culture personalities. Eugène Delacroix lived close to him, and Frederic Chopin came to visit and played on the house piano by the brand Pleyel. Also Giacchino Rossini and Charles Dickens have been guests at Ary Scheffer. After the death of Ary Schef Fer, the house remained in the family. In 1956 it was sold to the French state, and in 1982 it was transferred to the municipality of Paris, which shortly after opened the house as a museum, and from 1987 with the present, perhaps something for sweetness-filled name, the Musée de la Vie Romantique. The Musée de la Vie Romantique, is what in Italian calls a Casa Museo, a house where one experiences how certain people lived or how to be decorated at a certain time among people in the better-off strata of society. In the different rooms of the house's two levels there are furniture, various artifacts and a cast of Chopin's hand. And then there are some pictures of Ary Scheffer and contemporary artists. Very nice and beautiful all together. It is free to visit the house itself, where Ary Scheffer lived. Special exhibitions are arranged in an adjacent building, which you pay admission to see.

  • I was not expecting such a nice varied collection of items in addition to the art. It is a lovely small museum and the permanent collection is free.  more »

  • This place os romantic as it gets! It really feels like you’re walking into a secret garden. There’s a beautiful home/museum with paintings inside, and outside is transformed into a cafe area where you can sip your coffee and eat some baked goodies. There’s also inside seating too, but it gets warm really quick. The cafe doubles up as a green house that’s inside the cafe, hence the warm temperature. This is a great place for a small break and take pics
  • Not wheelchair accessible but definitely romantic! The garden cafe was gorgeous and a wonderful location to relax. Its an uphill walk from the metro but manageable. Staff were polite and helpful
