  • It is "Windmill of Rade" on the way down towards the Moulin Rouge from the hill of Montmartre. It was a restaurant under the windmill, but i could see it enough from the outside. There used to be 30 windmills on the hill in Montmartre, but now we only leave two, including here. It is a valuable windmill.

  • What has been commonly referred to as the "Moulin de la Galette" since 1834 is actually made up of two windmills: the Blute-fin and the Radet. Both mills are located on private property and are generally not accessible to the public. These mills were the property of the Debray family around which a historical fact or legend is attached. On 30 March 1814, during the siege of Paris by the Russian Imperial Army, despite armistice talks between the two parties, father and son Debray, who defended the Montmartre mound, refused to surrender and fired cannon at the Russian army. The father was reportedly shot dead and then skinned into four pieces attached to the wings of his mill, while the son (Nicolas-Charles Debray) survived after being hit in the throat. It was this same son who 20 years later transformed the mills into a ball and guinguette, which became the most famous in Paris. Even today, one of the mills can be seen at the corner of Lepic Street and Girardon Street. The other can be seen from Lepic Street. Famous painters (Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Maurice Utrillo, etc.) immortalized this famous place of Parisian gait.

  • Hidden away a bit we saw it in autumn so there wasn't much leaf coverage. We didn't appear to be able to get too close but you can a view around the back from the road too. Lovely old mill, there's a smaller one up the road too.
  • Have to find this little gem, such an icon. Stunning
