  • The tower of this old flour mill is closely linked to the history and especially to the prehistory of the Montparnasse Cemetery. Indeed, this cemetery of some 19 ha with to this day more than 40,000 graves was once occupied by wheat fields that belonged to the monks in charge of the Hospital of Charity, hence its name of The Mill of Charity. This mill was used by local farmers to grind their grain. The monks were the first to set up a cemetery for the members of their congregation (Brothers of Charity or Brothers of Saint John of God). During the revolution, their land was confiscated and the mill was later converted into a guinguette. When the so-called "Southern" cemetery was opened in the early 19th century, the mill tower served as the keeper's residence. Today, it is one of the trademark images of the Montparnasse cemetery.

  • This tower, which is a part of an old mill, remember that for a long time this place was occupied by fields managed by the brothers of St. John of God, located street of the Holy fathers, called as brothers of charity, hence its name. In the 17th century, this place becomes the necropolis of these religious. This mill was not the only one, since at least 30 existed at the time for producing flour. This site in height compared to the rest of the region, was favourable to the use of the wind. Besides students had named this eminence "The mount Parnassus" in reference to the muses of Greek Antiquity. His fate becomes a tavern at the time of the Revolution and then still located outside the walls, it is integrated in the cemetery of Montparnasse at the time of its inception in 1824; He then serves as housing for the goalkeeper. Today, it serves as refresher materials of gravediggers and entered on the HD since 1931. Certainly it is not spectacular, but it is a remnant of the history of this place and deserves to be preserved.
