  • Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur Comte de Rochambeau (1725-1807) was a soldier, who was illustrated during the wars led by Louis XVI. In 1781, he participated with the French troops, next to the armies of Washington, in the war of independence. He was mainly involved in the decisive battle of Yorktown, with Washington and Lafayette, against the English General Charles Cornwallis. This victory will seal American independence in 1782. He is honored by Louis XVI and will later be named Marshal. The square and the bronze statue of Rochambeau, are created in 1934, the statue having been the subject of a Franco American subscription. It is the work of the sculptor Fernand Hamar in 1933. Rochambeau is depicted standing, in military attire with his tricorn, tending his arm and hand straight, showing the enemy. With his left hand, he holds a major state card, while one of the Bombarde was placed on the ground. Recently and to give it a more "modern" look, poof jokes "have placed a backpack on his shoulders!! The base is engraved with the traditional explanations on its role and its prestige dates. This statue is also well placed, under the shadings and in the middle of a flowerbed with lawn. She faces the Galliera Museum. I know some, will probably say that this is not very "touristy". But good the common history of France and the United States, well worth it!!
