  • Until this day of June 2018, I did not know Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896). Yet I love classical music and operas. At the detour of the Parc waterfall and near the grotto, we discover this monument, work by Alexandre Falguière (which I know of renown), inaugurated in 1900. At that time, Ambroise Thomas was still famous for his operas, such as Hamlet, where his heroine Ophelia is represented at the foot of the master who sits on a rock is thoughtful and contemplates his work. And yet, as much as Hector Berlioz, like other composers of that time, Emmanuel Chabrier or César Franck, have crossed the time and are still played today. Ambroise Thomas, this stranger! The conductor Alfred Bruneau sums up well what happened in the circumstance, I quote "the music of Ambroise Thomas is neither good nor bad; light, easy, melodious, she was above all made to please the bourgeois public of the second empire. Or Chabrier said of him: "Ambroise Thomas is the last representative of the long generation of fast producers who, for half a century, fueled with tireless and perhaps excessive fertility our lyrical theatres. Thrown into the militant life in the easy time of the Auber and the Adolphe Adam, the sweet Cantor of Mignon, who was not an innovator, had no other ambition but to follow the road indicated by fashion. In other words; "who follows fashion and does not innovate, is condemned to oblivion"! However, this monument, while being a little conventional and classical and without originality, is of good quality and deserves a halt to observe it! In addition, it is located in a charming and romantic area of the Park, under the shadings, with Virgin vine descents.

  • Mainly known in the 19th century for his operas, the composer Ambroise Thomas, a native of Metz in Moselle, died in Paris in 1896. At his death, to honour him, the directors of the Opera commissioned this work to the sculptor Alexandre Falguière, a pupil of the illustrious Albert-Ernest carrier-Belleuse. This is a beautiful sculpture. Come by Metro, line 2 station "Monceau".
