This is the first in a series of portraits of generals that will be made during the Second Empire. This statue is really impressive because you can see Marshal Ney leading his troops to the charge with the sword in his hand. The statue was completed by the artist in 1853. Happy because François Rude is a Burgundian, born in Dijon, and I invite you to visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon which is in my opinion the most beautiful museum in France after that of the Louvre. You can see different statues of this sculptor, a copy of this statue exists in the museum but this one is marble (I guess). I recognize that a bronze statue is prettier. Otherwise we can also see his work "Departure of the Volunteers of 1792" which is under the triumphal arch of the Place de l'Étoile in Paris Not far from this statue is the statue of Georges Bernados, a modern work. Interesting to compare modern and ancient art. Personally, I prefer ancient art because if I look at Ney's statue, the details are really impressive.

This statue was commissioned by the provisional Government, wishing to erect a monument in honor of the "brave of the brave" on the very place where he was shot after his death sentence by Louis XVIII for his support of Napoleon Bonaparte. Its creation was the subject of a decree signed on March 18, 1848, but the resources lacked to carry out its execution. A new decree was signed on 22 March 1852, and the work was entrusted to the architect Alphonse de Gisors (who owes the Orangerie du Jardin du Luxembourg) and to the sculptor François rude. Inaugurated on 7 December 1853, modelled by rude and melted by Eck and Durand, the bronze monument, which originally had to represent Marshal Ney showing his chest and opening his heart to death, consists of a pedestal of white marble resting on a base of red granite, supporting the statue of the Marshal, sword lifted and commanding the charge to his troops. On the different sides of the pedestal are traced elements of the life, career and weapon facts of this great man.
Love Hemingway's description and back story on Mike in A Moveable Feast
Beautiful monument of Michel Ney (1769 - 1815), french soldier and military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars.
