Medici Fountain, Paris

#362 of 2,943 in Things to do in Paris
Now a beautiful attraction in Paris, Medici Fountain was originally created in the 17th century at the Luxembourg gardens for Maria de' Medici, Queen of France. You can visit this site and admire the romantic fountain in a peaceful atmosphere. The grotto fountain is adorned with columns and completely covered with reliefs that simulate water seeping from rock walls.

The fountain is also decorated with allegorical statues, which were added much later. The first statue, Venus in the center niche, is now replaced by the mythological figures of the lovers Acis and Galatea in white Carrara marble. The jealous Cyclops statue, Polyphemus, observes the couple from a ledge. Brush up on your mythology before you arrive to really enjoy these artistic stories. • My favorite spot in the Luxembourg garden. Go early if you want to get a chair by the fountain.
  • Spectacular photographic opportunity, especially in fall colors. Very tranquil scene.
