  • France, which hosts the Universal Exhibition of 1878, around the present Trocadero, commissions six life-size statues from renowned sculptors to represent the 6 continents (including the two Americas, without the Antarctic). This is how Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900) created the statue of a sitting woman who represents ASIA. Dressed in a long garment, bun hair, bare breasts, she holds a set of Buddhas in her right hand. The Asian woman, according to Falguière, is amazing contrast and stereotypes of that time. A small elephant sits on the back of the statue as if to add the symbol of a multicultural Asia. Mathurin Moreau ( 1822-1912), represents OCEANIA, with a woman with long knotted hair, topless, wearing a long loincloth and holding in her right hand summary tools. The sculptor thought it useful to add a small animal that looks like a kangaroo. America North, by Eugene Hiolle (1834-1886), is characterized by an Indian woman holding a trophy of the Declaration of Independence, on which are engraved the names of the personalities who founded the USA. Washington, Franklin, Lafayette and Jefferson. Eugene Hiolle, with his allegory in the form of concord, seems to forget that the Indians were largely massacred by the occupants. As for EUROPE, it is rightly represented by a female warrior who still holds a branch of Olivier (peace sign) for form. AFRICA , by Eugene Delaplanche (1836-1891) is still with breasts in the air (this seems to be an obsession with Western clichés) holds a large flat wicker basket containing fruits and vegetables and wears the Sahel headdress. These iron cast iron statues, once gilded, are now on the side of the forecourt of the Musée d'Orsay, lined up as if in the parade. The attention to detail makes these works very realistic and of good quality.
