  • One of the interesting things to see at the Palais Garnier Opera House is the monument bust to the famous French architect Charles Garnier (1825-1989) placed along Rua Scribe. Here you see a decorativ...  more »
  • Under Napoleon III and his loyal Baron Haussmann, the construction of a new opera was decided in 1858. This building is in a context of complete redevelopment of the neighborhoods of Paris, with the breakthrough of the Avenue de L'opéra and the development of the Grands Boulevards. Following a competition in 1860, renowned architects compete as Rohault de Fleury city architect and the famous violet the Duke, "repairman" of many buildings including Notre Dame de Paris. It is the young and unknown Charles Garnier (1825-1898) who wins the General surprise. So it was necessary for his project to surpass all the others to push so much precedence. The result is now evident, it is enough to observe what we see behind his monument, which is dedicated to him, side Rue scribe. Charles Garnier then appealed to the prestigious artists of his time, to the best workers in France and also to exclusively French products such as quarry stones, which decorate this beautiful building. The balance of shapes, decorations, gilts, sculptures, and especially the innovative grand staircase, are all works from the genius of Charles Garnier. I always enjoy visiting periodically this beautiful architectural ensemble, which magnifies the French genius of the 19th century. Honour, then, to Charles Garnier the monument comprises a bronze bust by Jean Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) placed on a carved marble pedestal, framed by two bronze allegories representing "Fame" and "l'Etude" by Gabriel Jules Thomas (1824-1905). Underneath and on the face of the base, one can see a bronze plaque with a large cartridge with a gilded drawing on the sheet representing the plan of the Opera. In the Center in a pediment, the arms of Paris are framed by twigs rising to a Crown. This monument has been recently restored for the pleasure of visitors.
