  • Jean Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) was a French naturalist, inventor of biology and pupil of Buffon at the Jardin du ROI. In particular, he carried out the classification of invertebrates, or 80% of animals, after having studied plants. He is also one of the precursors of the theory of evolution before Darwin. It is therefore natural that he be honored with a monument located on the main façade of the garden of plants, with the museums of evolution, place Valhubert, looking at the Seine and the Quai Saint Bernard. The statue made in bronze, by Léon Fagel (1851-1913) in 1908, was melted by ferry Capitain to the forges de Bussy. It is placed on a high base. The base is carved from animals and plants on the main face with the inscription "to the founder of the doctrine of evolution". On the side, you can read dated information on its scientific course since 1802. On the back of the pedestal, a bronze bas-relief represents a man (Lamark) seated next to a woman (his daughter Cornélie) with the astonishing legend "posterity will admire you, she will avenge you, my father!" It is an epitaph pronounced by his daughter Cornélie, because during his life Lamark, who is a visionary, was subjected to offensive attacks, about his work, which pushed the ideas received. Lamarck is depicted seated, his arms crossed with a hand touching his cheek as if he were thinking. It looks thoughtful, which is not surprising for a researcher. This work is a good Bill and lets himself be watched..

  • Former military, Jean-Baptiste de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, works at the "Jardin du ROI", the future "garden of plants" and is introduced to Botany. He will become a professor at the Museum of natural history. You will find its bronze statue at the entrance to the garden, on the side of place Valhubert. It is due to the Capitain foundry and the sculptor Léon Fagel who made it in 1908. You can come by Metro, lines 5, 10 station "Gare d'Austerlitz" or "RER C" same station.
