The Hôtel de Sully is an hôtel particulier, or private mansion, in the Louis XIII style, located in the Marais, IV arrondissement, Paris. It is located at 62 rue Saint-Antoine. It is the seat of the Centre des monuments nationaux, the French national organization responsible for state-owned historic buildings and sites.HistoryThe financier Mesme Gallet built the hôtel, with gardens and an orangery, between 1625 and 1630. The building was designed by the architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau. The site was chosen to give access to the Place Royale - today the Place des Vosges - and was located in the Marais, at the time a fashionable district of Paris.Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, and former Superintendent of Finances to King Henri IV, purchased the hôtel on 23 February 1634. He completed the redecoration of the hôtel, and spent his last years living there. His grandson Maximilien commissioned the architect François Le Vau (younger brother of the more famous French architect Louis Le Vau) to build an additional wing in 1660, to the west of the garden. The Hôtel de Sully still bears the name of this family, who owned the building into the 18th century.

  • The Hotel de Sully is located at 62 rue Saint Antoine in the so-called "Marais" district near the Place des Vosges with which it communicates. Built in 1630 by the Comptroller of Finance in a beautiful style "Louis XIII" , it was the home of the minister of King Henry IV , Maximilian of Bethune Duke of Sully in 1634 . The building houses a heritage library that can be visited and the services of National Monuments that do not visit. It is still interesting to admire the courtyard of Honour which overlooks in the street Saint Antoine from where one accesses by a porch terrace . On two floors, the façade unfolds its superb allegorical sculptures (Autumn and Winter), around the large windows topped with decorative capitals devoid of mannerism. The style of this period, still imbued with "Renaissance" elements on the façade, creates a slate-covered roof with a "Seated Dog" window above a festoon ledge. When we cross the building and we meet on the other side, the French garden offers itself to our eyes. Surrounded by a wall with "The Orangery" in the background, we can see a large multi-centenary oak tree with benches to rest and admire the setting. This haven of peace is a blessing in this area very popular with tourists and Parisians. The site is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the bookstore Tuesday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • On the way to Place de vosges, i saw tourists coming in, so I went there and found a nice building and garden. It was originally a house of aristocrats, and now it looks like a museum.
