Fontaine Stravinsky, Paris

#479 of 2,943 in Things to do in Paris
A whimsical public fountain ornamented with 16 works of sculpture, plus moving and spraying water representing the works of composer Igor Stravinsky, Fontaine Stravinsky was created in 1983 by sculptors Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle. The fountain is a shallow basin of 580 sq m (6,243 sq ft) above the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, an organization devoted to promoting modern music and musicology. Because of the offices and rooms below, the fountain was designed to be as lightweight as possible, with very shallow water, a bottom of stainless steel, and sculptures composed of plastic and other light materials. • Big disappointment today during my visit to the place Stravinsky by returning from my RV in the neighborhood. No water in the fountain basin, probably for the winter period. Without the games and jets of water, one discovers the reverse of the décor and the colorful sculptures and loaded gears of limestone make grey mine in the midst of a tangle of black pipes of a great ugliness. Also, when I went around, there was a pestilentil odor in some places..... who did not seem to disturb the many people sitting on the edge of the basin. It is a great day for the Stravinsky fountain to be redelivered in water and music!

  • The Fontaine Stravinsky (Stravinsky Fountain) is situated just outside Centre Pompidou in the Le Marais district of Paris. It is an intriguing fountain with 16 whimsical sculptures inspired by and to commemorate the late composer Igor Stravinsky. The fountain is turned off during the winter months and the pool emptied. However, the various sculptures are always interesting to see, even if just to imagine what the fountain looks like during warmer months of the year. It's fine to give the fountain a few minutes to view and enjoy before/after your visit to the Centre Pompidou.
  • Just behind the Centre G. Pompidou, this is a fun fountain to visit with interesting sculptures.
