Located in Place Saint-Michel, Fontaine Saint-Michel is an impressive fountain constructed during 1858 to 1860. You may find this especially interesting considering it is not like most fountains in Paris. This fountain used different colors of stone--columns of red marble from Languedoc, green marble, blue stone from Soignies, yellow stone from Saint-Yllie, and bronze statues.
Fontaine Saint-Michel was also the last monumental wall fountain built in Paris, the end of a traditional Renaissance style which had begun with the Medici Fountain in the 17th century and continued with the Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons in the 18th century. The later monumental fountains in Paris were all free-standing in the centers of squares or parks. To visit Fontaine Saint-Michel and other attractions in Paris, use our Paris trip planner .

Decidedly, we like it in the Bonaparte. I do not remember the inscription that is there, but I remember that it mentions the Emperor Napoleon III and a date in the 1860s. She obviously represents the Archangel Saint-Michel who crushes the devil. For years, she was my favorite meeting point to find friends. While I was waiting for them, I loved to approach the Seine and contemplate the splendid medieval buildings that run along the Ile de la Cité with one of the most beautiful views of Notre-Dame Cathedral. And then see the people on the terrace sipping a cocktail or lunch, the real Parisian life what. I love this place, all the neighborhoods all around, and I think tourists love it just as much.

I Liked the polychromic composition. It is Interesting to combine red marble columns and bronze sculptures on a greenish-buffy-gray background.
It was lovely to see the fountain but unfortunately it was running. I think all the water sights like this and around the Louvre are turn off for winter. We saw several like this. But it wasn’t too bad as the sun was shining and there were lots of people around chatting. Good place to sit and watch the world go by. There are some nice little cafes and restaurants not to far away if you need refreshments or food. So glad it didn’t rain as we probably wouldn’t have even stopped to look.
