  • This beautiful bronze fountain, known as the "Four Parts of the World", is located at the end of the Observatory's driveway with the Luxembourg garden as a perspective. It was built in 1874, by the architect Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881) collaborator of Baron Haussmann , who transformed Paris as it is today. Its realization involved artists of great talent, such as Jean Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875), who directed the four typical women representing the only four parts of the world (Africa, America, Asia and Europe), which support the globe adorned with signs of the zodiac , directed by Eugene Legrain (1837-1915) . Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) made the eight sea horses pitched up in bronze, the turtles at the edge of the pond and the dolphins in the center, which spit water. The set is set on a pedestal adorned with bronze garlands in the middle of a large round basin that collects the waters. This magnificent unforgettable fountain, which I always enjoy visiting as soon as it is put into water, is the fruit of a very abundant creative period of the nineteenth century under Napoleon III, who today dresses Paris with countless remarkable works. You will find this fountain under several names like Fountain of the Observatory, or Fountain Carpeaux. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1926. It is located precisely in the garden of the Great Explorers, Marco Polo and Cavelier de la Salle, in the 6th arrondissement. It is accessible by the METRO station of the RER B "Port Royal".

  • This fountain is really beautiful, the idea of projecting water by turtles on seated horses is really pretty to look at. There are really nice pictures to take.
