  • These fountains that functioned during my visit (I'm lucky), were recently renovated by the city of Paris and appear in all their splendor. Located on the sides of the square, they magnify, which made the pillars of France's values under Napoleon III. Built by Gabriel Davioud in 1860, the Jura stone basins represent allegories, characters of Greek mythology, seated turning their backs. Each character holds the attributes that characterize it, in relation to its function. In the Center, a Jet coming out of a small basin, falls into the pelvis and two lion-headed masks spit water on each side. Under the Sun, the clear blue color of the pond water, creates a romantic atmosphere. The fountain located on the South side, near the theatre, represents "Commerce and the arts". The God of Commerce, mercury holds a balance and a Horn of abundance. The arts are represented by the Muse of music, Euterpe, who holds, a lyre and a torch. These two bronze sculptures are the work of Auguste Louis Ottin (1811-1890). This sculptor is very eclectic, he moves from allegorical romanticism to Impressionism, as a precursor of this style in 1874. The fountain located in the North, is dedicated to "Agriculture and industry". In the same principle, the two bronze statues are the work of Charles Alfonse Gumery. The Allegory of agriculture is crowned with spikes and flowers and holds a wreath. The work, represents a man holding a hammer, with an anvil and a wheel. The sculptor Gumery (1827-1871), is very much in vogue under the second empire, Grand Prix of Rome, Professor at the school of fine arts of Paris, he has produced works of ornamentation of the Opéra de Paris. It is worth remembering another artist, Michel Joseph Liénard (1810-1870), who made the lion-headed masks, spouts of water jets. As for Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881), the architect, he is very involved in the work of Haussmann and participates in many monuments, which will beautify Paris. These two superb fountains, are the major asset of this square and create, when they are in water and under the Sun, a romantic and pleasant atmosphere, by the singing of the jets of water, which is quite rare in Paris!

  • Beautiful fountains that are quite similar but not enough highlighting in a square that does not seem very maintained.... This square gave me an impression of not being finished and quite dusty.... Only the fountains come out a little but are in a pretty dark scenery that does not bring them out.... I did not feel the urge to stop in this park... To improve....
