  • I approached and discovered this huge fountain. Fortunately 2 opinions before mine allowed me to know more about this fountain and its origin. I'll let you read them, it will be better presented than if I copy! Note a statue with straw at its feet for some time but without indication of its origin. If anyone knows!

  • This wall fountain is located in the impasse of the Poissonnerie, which starts from the rue Jarente, in the 4th arrondissement. When the Priory of Saint Catherine of the Val des Ecoliers was destroyed in 1773, the place left free allows to create new streets like that of Jarente, Ormesson etc and also a fountain to bring water to the new district. The Saint Catherine market is created on the current place of the same name and the fishmongers need water. It is the master of the King's buildings, Monsieur Caron, who is responsible for the realization of the fountain in 1783. This fountain is styled "classic" with a two-pilaster frame with a boss, alternating with smooth stone and called "A freezing". It is topped with a triangular-fronted marquee with a carved tympanum of aquatic plants and a vase from which a "frozen" water mouth comes out. Strangely the fountain is topped with a stacking and a pyramid-shaped element, which resembles a chimney! The top of the Central frame is decorated with a low relief with a bundle of lictors (ancient term of executors), horns of abundance and dolphins. On each side, the supporting wall is decorated with a rosette carved with shells, aquatic plants and reeds. The water which, on the day of my visit, flows from the bronze mascaron, in the form of a satyr, is fresh and pleasant. The flowing water bundles, calls the passer-by to come and drink!! Note that this fountain has been listed in the historic monuments since 1925. It is accessible by metro station "Saint Paul" line n ° 1. Then you have to take rue Saint Antoine towards the Bastille and take the rue de Turenne on the left, up to Jarente Street on the left, or 300 m of journey
