The Fondation Custodia is an art museum in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, focusing on European Old Master works, including works by Dutch, Flemish, Italian and French artists. The museum was founded in 1947 by the collector and art historian Frits Lugt to house his collection of drawings, prints and paintings. Located at 121 rue de Lille, it occupies the Hôtel Turgot, an 18th-century mansion.
The collection, continually added to that formed by Lugt, includes works by Dutch, Flemish, Italian, French, Danish, British, German artists, and features over 7,000 Old Master drawings, 30,000 prints, and 220 paintings. The focus of the prints is Dutch and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Artists in the collection include Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Hans Holbein the Younger and Pieter Brueghel the Elder. It also comprises many hundreds of artists' letters.

  • Some places reconcile you with Paris... This was the case with the Custodia Foundation, which I had never heard of and which I discovered during the two joint exhibitions: "Frants Hals, family portraits" and "Children of the Golden Century", which are held until 25 August. Founded in a private hotel in the "chicos" district of the National Assembly, far from the crowds of Orsay or the Louvre, you can visit these two exhibitions quietly, at its own pace. We were able to register for one of the guided tours organized on an ad hoc basis, of a high quality, the guide having his subject on the fingertips, allowing us to understand "from the inside" (in a way!) the evolution and details of the four works by Frans Hals and the children of the golden century. No doubt I will follow the programming closely, especially the next one on Willem Bastiaan Tholen

  • Hidden gem of a museum alongside the French Nationale Assembly building. A very fine collection of Old Master drawings and prints, and always high-quality touring exhibitions along the same lines.
  • Beautiful building with a very interesting and beautiful collection of drawings and paintings.
