  • In the 4th arrondissement, at the corner of the streets of Fourcy and Jouy, on the first floor of the building and close to a Wall lantern of street lighting, you will discover a bas-relief representing a remoulder. He was represented a glass by hand and a bottle at his side, because at the time, this sign signaled a wine merchant. The current building dating from 1974, so it is obvious that we are in the presence of a reproduction. The original was painted in colour and is located at the Carnavalet Museum. His sculptor remained unknown but the work was located around 1767. I attached the photo of the original sculpture for comparison. You can come by Metro, line 1, station "Saint Paul". If you come in vehicle, very difficult parking in the area.

  • This sign carved in the corner of the building located at the intersection of the streets of Jouy and Fourcy, is a copy. This is a copy because the building dates from 1974, the original was painted, being at the Carnavalet Museum, which probably dates from the XIII century. Anyway, it's still a good copy and a good idea, to have put this sign in this place. The sculpture you see, represents a grinder wearing a three-cornered hat, with its itinerant system, he does work on the foot with a removable Board. It's the same system used in the old machines sewing foot. But observing well, one realizes that this grinder has a glass in hand and holds a jug of wine probably. This grinder nicknamed "small wins", because he works in the street doing a small job, was originally the name of a wine merchant. This merchant had to get promotion through this sign, to say he was practicing low prices for workers, many in this popular area of the Marsh bottom. We so easily distinguished the stone wheel sharpening, that the foot board system to run. Knives are placed in front of the machine, which has a wheel to be moved. The sculptor has even pushed retail and represents the small reservoir of water drop to drop, placed at the top of the wheel, which moistens it, to be more abrasive. The inscription engraved at the bottom of the sculpture is unreadable. E made it's registration "Street"this sign is accessible by the metro station"Saint Paul" line no. 1, then he must go up the Rivoli Street towards the center of Paris and turn left into the street of Fourcy.
