Eglise Saint-Severin, Paris

4.7
Named after Séverin of Paris, a devout hermit who lived on the banks of the River Seine during the first half of the fifth century, Eglise Saint-Severin sprang up over his tomb in the 13th century. Over the years, priests commissioned several additions to the Gothic church, offering visitors a kind of tour through architectural history. Today, the site boasts the oldest bell in Paris, cast in 1412. It's also known for its flamboyant rose window above the west entrance, as well as several other ancient stained-glass windows. Be sure to see the church's unusual pillar, crafted to look like a palm tree. • A lover of architecture and history, this church will amaze you. The Latin Quarter contains historic monuments, and this is one of the most prominent sites in my view. its exterior architecture is quite imposing, well-solid, and it looks like no other. Built towards the end of the middle ages, it's flamboyant Gothic style, I love it. The ambulatory is just to fall, and we could spend hours admiring the impressive collection of large stained glass Windows. They are unfortunately not original but remain of a stunning beauty, except some large stained-glass windows of contemporary style that I find quite ugly in all honesty, and who swear terribly with the whole of the building and works that it Houses. But why did you do that? Sacrilege. Big disappointment for its few stained glass Windows. Fortunately, this is not enough to spoil the beautiful church, its large organs and its many beautiful paintings. You really have to visit it. It is well worth the detour, and I would never repeat it enough, but the churches are not only reserved for believers.

  • This is an excellent stopping place as you just enter the Left Bank. We were fortunate to be there during a well attended Mass and their organ sounds wonderful. I wish I would be their for an organ concert! What I especially liked were their modern stained glass windows. They are unique and a very moving addition to this church.
  • I went here after visiting Notre Dame and the West Bank. The is a is a Roman Catholic church in the Latin Quarter of Paris. It is one of the oldest churches that remains standing on the Left Bank. The church's external features includes and flying buttresses. Its bells include the oldest one remaining in Paris. Internal features of the church include both ancient stained glass and a set of seven modern windows.
