The Batignolles Cemetery is a cemetery in Paris.HistoryBatignolles Cemetery opened on 22 August 1833. Part of the cemetery had to be closed and the graves moved because of the construction of the great ring road (Boulevard Périphérique, between the exits of Porte de Clichy and Porte de Saint-Ouen).DescriptionExtending over nearly eleven hectares, slightly larger than the Montmartre Cemetery, Batignolles Cemetery contains approximately fifteen thousand graves, and it is the fourth cemetery intra muros of Paris, in terms of the number of graves. In terms of land area, only the Père Lachaise Cemetery and the Montparnasse Cemetery are larger. Within its perimeter, there are approximately nine hundred mature trees, mostly chestnuts and maples. Because of the construction of apartment buildings next to the cemetery, the Avenue des Fortifications is no longer accessible (from 2009-?).Notable burialsBatignolles is now the home for the earthly remains of André Barsacq, Alexandre Benois, André Breton, Alfred Bruneau, Lucienne Bréval, Gaston Calmette, Blaise Cendrars, Léon Dierx, Pierre Dreyfus, Marguerite Durand, Hélène Dutrieu, Cora Pearl, Joséphin Péladan, Benjamin Péret, Ray Ventura, Paul Vidal, Édouard Vuillard and André Zirnheld (in the family grave), among others.

  • This is perhaps not as well known as Père Lachaise, Montmartre and Montparnasse but is certainly worth a visit. Luminaries such as Edgar Degas, André Breton, Paul Verlaine and Léon Bakst are here and ...  more »
  • I was struck by the contrast between this Cemetery (known as quiet place) and the device ramp that passes over it. This gives a unusual at this place. The site is picturesque, I recommend it for history lovers.

  • This is the grave of commonwealth warriors. Place is clean, calm.
  • The staff were very friendly. I was forbidden to pose a candle, invoking a so-called forbidden written in the regulations. However, nothing in the regulation mentions such a prohibition. I contacted the City Hall of Paris on Twitter, they confirmed to me that such a ban does not exist-obviously, we are in a cemetery! On the other hand, messing up the cemetery * is * a real ban-yet the staff members did not bother to crush my candle, leaving wax everywhere. The hospital who cares about charity! In addition to this, I feel always watched, I feel like being seen as a UFO when I put my feet. Moreover, the cemetery is not necessarily pleasant in itself-broken slabs, Earth everywhere, the benches are always dirty, without even mentioning the part under the periph, always dirty too. If it were not for Paul Verlaine, the cemetery of Batignolles, I will not bother to come there regularly.
