Chapelle Expiatoire, Paris

4.1
Located in the eighth arrondissement of Paris, Chapelle Expiatoire is a chapel dedicated to Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette. When you visit this site, keep an eye out for the arched arcades within the chapel hall, which commemorate the Swiss Guards massacred at Tuileries Palace on August 10, 1792 whilst defending the Royal family.

Cypress trees once surrounded the chapel but were cut down in 1862, and a public garden was created instead. When you visit today, this historic building and its garden remain a peaceful, haunted place in the otherwise energetic center of Paris.

This historic site is also located at the former graveyard of 3,000 victims of the French Revolution. Make Chapelle Expiatoire part of your personalized Paris itinerary using our Paris trip maker .

  • Ordered by Louis XVIII, the chapel was built on the very site where the remains of his brother Louis XVI and his beautiful sister Marie-Antoinette were thrown before being found, identified and displaced in the royal necropolis of the Basilica of Saint-Denis. It is close to Saint-Lazare train station. Louis XVIII has repeatedly attempted to pay tribute to the martyred couple, thus catching up with the total absence of human dignity under the revolution. The magnificent statues of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in Saint-Denis, are also a will of Louis XVIII. Two superb, very expressive, different statue of the couple can also be enjoyed at the expiatory chapel which also hosts an annual mass dedicated to the Royal couple, every 21 January, the day of the King's execution. The Chapel is not the only interest of the site. The Chapel is preceded by two wings composed each of a succession of cenotaphes in homage to the Swiss guards massacred at the Palais des Tuileries. It should be noted that the entire site was financed by the King's personal money, not by part of the State budget.

  • Built on the site where the bodies of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI were initially buried, it is located close to the Madeleine. Unmissable for those who want to feel the historicity of the city.
