Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, Paris

4.7
#2 of 4,341 in Historic Sites in France
Widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris allegedly contains some of Catholicism's most significant relics, including the purported Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the True Cross, and one of the Holy Nails. Small, individually crafted statues adorn the exterior and serve as column supports and waterspouts; among these are the famous gargoyles and chimeras designed for water run-off. The cathedral is well known for its statue of the Virgin and Child, its antique organ, and its great bell. A large archaeological crypt exhibit combines detailed models of the architecture from different periods as well as underground ruins. You'll see, for instance, the amazing heating system installed under the floor during the Roman occupation. • Even though there was a long line of people waiting to go in we still decided to visit. The line moved very fast. Absolutely amazing cathedral. At first we were overwhelmed as there was so much to see...  more »
  • What good time spent during this visit of our Lady of Paris. This building, built in the 12th century has kept all his Majesty despite the passage of the centuries. The choir and the nave are absolutely gorgeous and what about stained glass! We bit just regret the lack of brightness and especially the huge crowd. but it is the lot of all the monuments of great fame. A must see

  • Don’t simply pass by this incredible building and fascinating history. Walk around it, take a guide tour, go inside and then walk around it again. Every time you visit, look at it from a different angle or perspective you will find something even more fascinating. The finished work is something to behold but the many histories of Paris and the Cathedral are even more compelling and was the real value we found during our many visits. Don’t be put off by the long line to get in, it takes only 10-15 min and you are inside, which if you take a guided tour fills you with new information and fascination for once you are inside. Be respectful once you are inside, regardless of your beliefs or curiosity, it is still a place of worship.
  • I was able to check this off my bucket list on Nov-17. It was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. The details that make this place the wonder it is are many and very intricate. The building is amazing in itself, and then you look at the doors, and they have their own details of beauty. It's sad that buildings like these are few and far in between. You're transported from the moment you walk in to a time of beauty, piety, and respect/honor for things of the past. You feel a reverence and peace walking in. I caught myself praising the Lord for the ability to see this place, and for the blessing of having an architect with such vision of beauty.
  • One of the most popular cathedrals in the world and certainly an eye-catcher. The outer architecture is indeed gorgeous with the gargoyles on the top adding to the spectacle. Note Dame is on a tiny island on the river Seine and is bet reachable by public transport to the closest metro and then a 5-10 minute walk over the bridges. The cathedral is visible from long distances and is easy to locate from there on. Lots of tourists throughout the day. Climbing to the top of the cathedral also possible with a ticket.
  • Must must see in Paris. If you are going to mass there is a separate queue to get in so don't get in the long visitors queue or you could miss mass. The international Sunday mass have about two sentences in English. You are best going to the mass that suits your time the most as there is limited difference in the international Vs the others. Place is stunning. If you want to go up the tower it's booked in time slots. Definitely book online the day before.
  • Gorgeous Cathedral located in Paris definitely worth the visit. Not only on the inside but on the outside as well. The details of the architecture is breathtaking. *One night while going for a walk, we revisited the Cathedral to see its nighttime beauty and sat down on one of the benches. It's quite calm at that time and there's seldom people, which is nice. If you're familiar with the Cathedral and it's surroundings you know that there's a few large squares of plants &flowers where people can sit around on. That being said, at night, what we observed to our great astonishment, is that coming out of those squares were many...many rats ! You read correctly. I wrote RATS ! If people/tourists only knew that while they were sitting/lying there and eating/drinking and taking selfies, there are rats about 5 inches from them. They hide in the plants and come out to feed at night and even rummage through the gridded garbage cans. Matter of fact, they run all over the place. It was hilarious to see. I counted about 12 of them while I stood on the bench while clenching my purse.* Back to the Cathedral, rats or no rats, it's definitely an important & interesting part of France's history.
