  • I did not know Frédéric Lemaitre (1800-1876), before passing his bust, just where the Canal Saint Martin hides. He began his career on a place, which the Parisians called "Le Boulevard du crime" (Boulevard du Temple) in the nineteenth century. In this space there were melodramatic theatres where crime was played there, such as "the Olympic circus", the dramatic Follies "etc. Then Victor Hugo, who remarked, made him play in his plays like Ruy Blas or Lucrezia Borgia. Frédéric Lemaitre diversifies in his choices with roles in classical plays by William Shakespeare, in hamlet. Victor Hugo says of him "Frederick the master, has a double donation of actor, that's why he was the Supreme comedian"!! On the part of Victor Hugo it is not forgotten. This bust of Frederick Lemaitre, who sits on a pedestal, is in the garden that bears his name, under the plane trees and in the middle of a flowerbed. The view of the Canal allows to see the movements of the temple lock, which gives this place a pleasant and unusual activity. When one observes the statue, one can try to understand the "why" from the "how" it was made. Generally the sculptor, Pierre Légé Granet (1842-1910), if he agrees to carry out the work for his model, must show empathy and value it. When we read the comments of the specialists on the websites, we always find the same description that everyone copies to the envy "she is not very flattering!" The work is a bust of the comedian Frédéric Lemaître, on a pedestal, his head turned to the right and the gaze to the left. It is glabrous, with bulky wavy hair. He wears a frock coat, a fashionable tie of the years 1830. Indeed, but is he himself on this bust or is he represented in one of his most well-known roles. No one will ever know.

  • Born in Le Havre and died in Paris in 1876, Antoine Louis prosper Lemaître was a famous actor of the "Boulevard du crime". A tribute was given to him by the sculptor Pierre-Légé Granet, who died in 1910 in Neuilly sur Seine. This bust took place along the Canal Saint Martin, at the corner of the rue du Faubourg du Temple. You can come by Metro, lines 3, 5, 8, 9, 11 station "République" or line 11 station "Goncourt-Hôpital Saint Louis".

  • You go through this place while cruising on Canal Saint Martin. It's an unusual experience as Paris isn't renowned for canals and the trip is interesting but a bit too long.
