Avenue Montaigne, Paris

#27 of 417 in Shopping in Paris
This historic site, Avenue Montaigne, was originally called the Widows’ Alley in the 18th century because women in mourning gathered there, but the street has changed much since those days. The current name comes from Michel de Montaigne, a writer of the French Renaissance. When you wander this street today, you will find a treasure trove of famous fashion stores, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Fendi, Valentino, and Ralph Lauren as well as jewelers like Bulgari and other upscale establishments such as the Plaza Athénée hotel.

The Canadian Embassy is also located here, and actress Marlene Dietrich once owned an apartment on this street for many years and died there in 1992. Make Avenue Montaigne part of your personalized Paris itinerary using our Paris trip planner .

  • This Avenue from the Champs Elysées roundabout to the Alma is a beautiful walk in the luxury and designer boutiques "Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Guicci and the list is still long..." But also you can admire the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. What you will also notice in this avenue is the "Park" automobile which is rather exceptional... In addition, the crowd is less than on the Champs Elysees. • The Avenue of the Montaigne is only for those pockets that can allow it, however the visit to the neighborhood and its decoration at Christmas are worth much worth.
