Avenue Montaigne, Paris

This historic site, Avenue Montaigne, was originally called the Widows’ Alley in the 18th century because women in mourning gathered there, but the street has changed much since those days. The current name comes from Michel de Montaigne, a writer of the French Renaissance. When you wander this street today, you will find a treasure trove of famous fashion stores, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Fendi, Valentino, and Ralph Lauren as well as jewelers like Bulgari and other upscale establishments such as the Plaza Athénée hotel.

The Canadian Embassy is also located here, and actress Marlene Dietrich once owned an apartment on this street for many years and died there in 1992. Make Avenue Montaigne part of your personalized Paris itinerary using our Paris trip planner .

  • for an Italian convinced to be the holder of world fashion (among other things sold in recent years to French and Spanish) this street will definitely be a blow to the heart... nothing more than via MonteNapoleone full of cheap starlets half-naked or via frattina with small shops, potholes and wandering garbage... here it's a dream... designers don't have shops but they have entire buildings. beautiful Black French boys at the entrances observe passers-by, flower bedboxes well maintained everywhere, bistro where a lemonade costs 15 euros and at the end, the square of my heart after Place de Vosges or Place Francois and moreover a few steps from the Champs Elysee... Needless to say, these highly famous shops are literally being stormed by the Japanese... we Italians, on the other hand, with our meager salaries, where do we want to go? luck that at least the chance to enjoy and admire the beauties of others has not yet been taken away from us. At least that...
