Located in the Place du Carrousel on the site of the former Tuileries Palace, Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is a triumphal arch built between 1806 and 1808 to commemorate Napoleon's military victories. Don't confuse it with the more famous Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile nearby, which was designed in the same year, but took 30 years to build and is about twice the size. This monument was based on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, and served as a gateway of the Tuileries Palace, the Imperial residence, before its destruction in 1871. Once, the famous horses of Saint Mark's cathedral in Venice, captured in 1798 by Napoleon, sat atop the arch. However, in 1815 following the Battle of Waterloo and the Bourbon restoration, France gave the sculpture back to Venice. A new set of horses, sculpted in 1828, now sits atop the arch. • Highly recommend climbing the Arc - the steps take no more than 10 mins and the sights are incredible. I recommend going in the early evening for golden hour/sunset.  more »
  • The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is a triumphal arch between the Louvre and Tuileries. The monument, which is about 19 m high, 23 m wide and 7.3 m deep, consists of three arches: one large (over 6 m high) and two small (about 4 m high) to its sides. The Arc de Triomphe is also lined with pink marble on the columns and the frontispiece and was built from 1807 to 1809 by order of Napoleon I.
