#1 of 17 in Things to do in Orange
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • For the first time in my life I see a Roman theatre still intact. Just gorgeous. The audio guide allows you to fully enjoy the history of this wonder. Also pause on the upper floors where we tell about the shows especially lyrical that still take place. I recommend making the orange-Nimes cumulative ticket that saves you a lot.

  • We almost skipped this visit during our 7 days in Nimes because the city of Orange does not offer the charm of Uzes, Avignon or Aigues-Mortes. It turned out to be one of the best Roman sites we saw, m...  more »

  • Beautiful theathre, wonderful acoustic. It gave a special feeling to listen to a concert here. Very very impressive. I loved it.
  • Beautiful architecture and exquisitely well-preserved Roman features make this place unique in the world, as it is the only Roman amphitheatre that still has its stage wall intact. They are constantly renovating the wall, but it is still worth visiting if you are in the area!
