Housed in a 13th-century Dominican sisters' convent, Musée d'Unterlinden features a large collection of local and international artworks and artifacts from prehistoric to contemporary times. Best known for its major collection of medieval and early Renaissance art from the Upper Rhine region, the collection's other highlights include the altarpieces, original drawings, engravings, and woodcuts by Colmar native Martin Schongauer; the Isenheim Altarpiece, sculpted by Niclaus of Haguenau and painted by Matthias Grünewald; engravings by Albrecht Dürer; and works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Holbein the Elder. In the basement, you'll find collections consisting of local archaeological artifacts. Religious and non-religious sculpture, mosaics, and stained glass from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods are at the heart of the collection. Core representations include a Rückers harpsichord made in 1624, as well as decorative arts, weapons, furniture, musical instruments, toys, and ornate wine barrels from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the golden age of Alsatian woodworking. COLMAR is a historic city full of surprises; the UNTERLINDEN museum is one of them. We are not disappointed. We enjoyed among other things: - the historic site spread over 3 rooms and a passage to the canal, open since I believe since 1953 - the tips to facilitate the visit and the welcome reserved for visitors - the magnificent cloister - sculptures of the Middle Ages and the Re birth - the few paintings of MONET, PICASSO, BAZAINE, DUBUFFET, etc. - the archaeological collections that trace human evolution from its origin - and the altarpiece of ISSENHEIM museum jewel!!! A nice visit to redo and advise!!
Meget stor og spændende oplevelse, synes det er et “must” at besøge det, men man skal kunne lide historie og kunst. more »Very big and exciting experience, it seems a "must" to visit it, but you have to like history and art.
Lovely Museum! Be careful it is easy to get lost. I would definitely like to go back once again!
Excellent Art experience in this Alsatian city. The ncient medieval art is a unique experience here, but also the contemporary stuff is worth a visit. Very recommended!
