Stary zidovsky Hrbitov, Prague

3.6
A place as mysterious as it is historically significant, Stary zidovsky Hrbitov is the largest Jewish graveyard in Europe. Founded in the 15th century by King Ottokar II of Bohemia, the cemetery is a major landmark of the city's old Jewish quarter. Although the burial ground contains some 12,000 visible tombstones, the exact number of people buried here remains uncertain, as the cemetery contains as many as 20 layers of graves laid one on top of the other. The oldest preserved tombstone dates back to 1439, and it belongs to a prominent poet and rabbi named Avigdor Kara. • There's nothing more to see than what you see in the photos: hundreds of tombstones piled up in a very small space. You have to walk it along a route, at the pass of the river of tourists that makes you feel like a sheep in a herd. You have to pay to see it, but you are forced to buy the entrance of all the monuments of the Jewish cemetery, you can not visit just one. It's totally expendable.

  • Visit early in the morning so not many people and were able to soak up the atmosphere of this cemetery full of history. A tangle of quite different tombs in the middle of the vegetation. It's a must-see.

  • A beautiful place, filled with history. It's very peaceful and really not too busy (beginning of september).
  • Very interesting place, must see. Buy a combined ticket from the information center nearby, don't waste time standing in line.. much faster and more reasonably priced
