Karlstejn Castle, Karlstejn

Towering over a busy little village, Karlstejn Castle once served as a hideaway for the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Seemingly unperturbed by the passage of time, this 600-year-old structure is situated just 30 km (18 mi) southwest of Prague. The castle's star attraction is a chapel designed by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV to hold his crown jewels, holy relics, and valuable documents. Centuries ago, this chapel safeguarded its treasures behind four doors with nineteen locks. Today, the chapel is open to visitors wishing to see its vaulted ceilings decorated with thousands of semiprecious stones. Most of the castle interior is accessible by guided tour only, so book your tickets in advance. • Very nice and helpful. Great for kids. The tour ran away like water. We would have given a longer one, and I didn't want that much.

  • very large, beautiful, well restored castle. Around the forest, rocks, rivules - the views are stunning. were in Prague for a week and decided at the same time to re-shock the surroundings, including this castle - did not regret! Get there easily: the train goes 40 minutes twice an hour. we bought 2 round-trip tickets (they can be used at any time on this day) - so cheaper than two tickets one at a time. through the village had to stomp far and into the hill, but it is normal for castles in hilly terrain. It is important to have good and comfortable shoes! There are a lot of steps in the castle. The views are stunning! You can see that the castle is royal - a real scale! bought the tour number 1 for 50 minutes: gave 320 kronor for an adult ticket and 230 kronor for a student, if I remember correctly. Not cheap, but tog...

  • Well worth the convenient train ride from Prague, but you will need to walk 30-45 minutes to the castle (depending on your speed) with a lot of up hill. "Classic" hilltop castle in great shape, more than just a structure, with a few artifacts here and there.
  • Beautiful castle and great guide! Our English guide was very fluent and friendly. The history of the castle was interesting and fun. The castle is unbelievably well-preserved. Not much tourists, recommended to visit on a sunny day for view and photography.
