Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, Cartagena

4.4
Wander the mighty fortifications of Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, which played a crucial role in protecting gold shipped back to Spain by conquistadors in the New World. Originally completed in 1536 and expanded twice in the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex system of bunkers, batteries, and parapets represents one of the most formidable accomplishments in the history of Spanish military architecture. Walk the walls, explore the maze-like network of tunnels that links the different parts of the fort, and enjoy panoramic views from its highest point. You'll find little written information throughout the castle, so rent an audio guide if you want to learn about its history. • This is an early trip in the day. It closes early at 6:30. You must be able to walk up a big hill but is wheel chair accessible in most areas but not in the tunnels.  more »
  • Interesting, but at the blazing sun. No prospect of shade. No sooner have they arrived than harass dozens of pushy sellers, far more aggressive than usual in Cartagena ...

  • Very cool castle/fort Worth checking out. We arrived early in the morning to beat the heat. This turned out of be a great idea, the only shade is in the caverns of the fort. You will likely be bombarded by aggressive vendors upon arrival. You may want to buy a water or two. The fort is very cool with nice views of the city. We opted to not take the tour as we speak English and had our 3 yr old son with us. The tour would likely be worth it and offer more insights for history buffs. My son enjoyed the cannons.
  • Decided to go here on a whim and was very impressed. Cartegena is known for its beaches and the Old City, but this is a very good piece of history to give the island some historic background. Not to mention the views from the top are outstanding. Very interesting to see the point of view of history from a different country. I recommend checking this out. It'll give you a better perspective of this tourist town.
