Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, Santiago

4.6
#2 of 221 in Museums in Chile
Poignant, sobering, and politically charged, Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos explores the human rights violations perpetrated by Chile's former dictator, Augusto Pinochet. During his 17-year reign between 1973 and 1990, Pinochet executed thousands of Chileans, tortured tens of thousands more, and forced up to 200,000 into exile. The museum cleverly compares his government's atrocities with others still happening around the world today, through a chronological and multisensory experience. Consider renting an English audio guide, as many of the signs are only in Spanish. Put Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos at the forefront of your travel plans using our Santiago planner .

  • It's a very impactful visit. The museum takes a retrospective of the military coup in Chile and makes a painful reading of difficult years in the country.

  • The information in the museum is interesting and well curated. All the information is in Spanish which means you’ll have to rent an audio guide for $2000. My only issues with this museum is there wasn’t any soap in the bathrooms, there are no water fountains, and they could add a few more benches for accessibility.
  • Sobering stories of the Pinochet era told through tributes, photos, artwork, multimedia and personal affects. Really well done. Educational and powerful experience. Very easy to get to via metro -
