Central Market (Mercado Central), Santiago

Inspect the daily haul at Central Market (Mercado Central), a great place to shop for fresh fish in Santiago. Give yourself a second to adjust to the potent smell of fish, then meander through the aisles, keeping an eye out for any particularly exotic catches. You can sit down and enjoy some of the day's spoils at one of the market's many fish restaurants, but beware of tourist traps--while many offer decent meals at reasonable prices, some will try almost anything to drag you into their overpriced establishment. • Like any market in the world, the aromas and visuals do not attract everyone. But, it is interesting to see what is commonly consumed by the locals. If you visit at lunchtime, be careful not to spend more than planning. The waiters literally grab the potential customers. And they talk a lot about the aromas and smells inside the market, which might disrupt the meal. An exaggeration that borders the grooming to go to the largest, most expensive local restaurant. Walk and search, ' cause it's going to be worth it. The local operator, partner of the Brazilian operator, takes the tourist to the market, and abandons it there. Only those who buy another package, there, at the end of the tour, which is taken back to the hotel. I consider it an absolute lack of respect for the client, and a danger to those who certainly do not know Santiago.

  • Our tour was in the morning and our goal was to know the Emporio Zunino and its famous empanadas (really fantastic)! As the location is close to the Mercado Central we decided to extend the walk there! We enter and come across the restaurants staff preparing the place to wait for the guests for lunch! And Pasmem, mice and cats running through the hall! A horror!

  • Very vibrant and lively market (not on Sunday to Tuesday) that caters were highly to tourists. This means it is generally safe and expensive. However, it is preferred if you are visiting and a tourist to the more local markets across the bridge which can be difficult to navigate on your own.
  • The famous Mercado Central is a must-see of Santiago, there are nice restaurants and food, if you go with a guide you will hear a bit of the market's history which is interesting, although the market is smaller than it seems to bit when you see the pictures on the Internet. If you visit the 'Central' you might as well visit the other markets that are nearby.
