Still the official imperial residence, Royal Palace features a palace to the north, the lavish Silver Pagoda to the south, a throne hall in the middle, and an inner court with private residential quarters to the west. The palace was built in 1866, but none of the original buildings have survived the test of time. Some were torn down and completely rebuilt, like the royal temple which had more than 5,300 silver tiles laid down during the 1960s. This silver pagoda houses two famous statues of Buddha: a small crystal emerald one and a larger one decorated with more than 9,500 diamonds. See the largest frescos in Southeast Asia on the 19th century walls surrounding the pagoda. Another notable structure is an open-air pavilion still used as a stage for classical dance performances. The part that can be visited is not very huge compared to other castles, but it is not one of the largest or richest countries in the world. Very nice facility, the relics that you can look at are quite nice. I found the stupas (tombs for the kings) impressive, I didn't know anything like that. I found the model of the temple complex of Angkor Wat particularly interesting. The gardens are very well maintained and invite you to linger. There was also a local group of musicians who played an interesting music that was probably typical.
This Palace is one of its kind! If it wasn't under Refurbishment I would give it a 5 star! Very well maintained gardens and the place is so beautiful to behold! $10 per person they open at 2pm until 5... more »
Palace Gate Hotel, Phnom Penh Have stayed in many art- deco hotels, but cannot think of a better one. Built into the grounds of a French colonial home right opposite the palace, it is an art museum. Superb staff and amenities. Great gym ( awesome views) and pool. And a great breakfast spread. I'll be back just to stay at this place.
The palace occupied a large expanse of ground and comprised several buildings. The buildings were majestic with steep roofs and very similar to Thai architecture. What I found interesting were the sculptures of celestial beings that supported (or could be just decorative architectural pieces) the edges of the roofs with both hands holding up the eaves of the roof and feet at the sides of the wall. There were exhibits in the buildings but were not as impressive or numerous as those in the Royal Palace of Thailand. Near the exit, a group of musicians were playing music with traditional musical instruments which were commonly found in South East Asian countries.
