Plaza Dorrego, Buenos Aires

4.1
Placed in the heart of the city, Plaza Dorrego serves as a square boasting a long history and a popular present-day scene. When you go, look for historical buildings erected during the 19th century when the area served as the main residential neighborhood. The old architecture blends with new structures hosting cafes, bars, pubs, and numerous antique stores. If you hear lively music, check for musical and dance exhibitions like tango displays. If possible, see if you can catch the market that takes place each Sunday when vendors offer antiques, crafts, jewelery, period clothing, and much more. • It is in the neighborhood of San Telmo that sin a little for lack of cleanliness and some degraded buildings. It is a square with bars and restaurants that the natural people attend at the end of the day and the beginning of the night. In the square there are spontaneous street performers some of which make performances of Tango dances. It's in the jam of the location of the Historieta of Mafalda.

  • The Sunday flea market in San Telmo is known worldwide. You usually associate that with a visit to Plaza Dorrego-and I can only recommend that. Especially in the afternoon there are usually also tango performances. We experienced these in astonishingly high quality and also paid it off with a proper banknote at the final "hat round." Despite a full place with a wide variety of stalls, the atmosphere is quiet and cosy. You can stroll around and buy one or the other souvenirs, have an orange juice freshly pressed or have something to eat in one of the cafes/restaurants on the edge of the square (partly also with tango demonstrations inside). All around a very leisurely Sunday trip that you shouldn't miss! Why only 4 and not 5 stars? For me, there were strokes at the restaurants, which unfortunately were too touristy for me-in contrast to the rest of those involved in the square, they partly lost their soul and forgot a little the hospitality or the good service.
